FAQs

What is family literacy?

Family literacy is a comprehensive approach to education that focuses on improving the literacy skills and educational outcomes of all family members, from parents and caregivers to children. It recognizes that literacy is not limited to individual learners but extends to the entire family unit. Parents can work towards passing their GED® test or improving their English skills while helping their children to succeed in school. By participating in education together, families have a greater chance at success.

Why is family literacy important?

Family literacy programs not only benefit individual family members but also contribute to stronger families, improved communities, and a more literate society overall. They provide parents and caregivers with the knowledge and skills to support their children’s early learning and school readiness and empower adults to improve their literacy and education levels. Family literacy creates a positive learning environment where different generations within a family learn from and support each other.
